I'm bored; here's a menubar post!

OS X Menubar

I’m bored, which is usually a bad thing. So I decided to post one of these, which should be an all too familiar post for anyone who reads blogs done by Mac users.

In any case:

  • Quicksilver. I use this on an hourly basis (if not more frequently). Especially-favorite function: “Open Terminal Here”.
  • NetworkLocation. This is a nifty app that lets me change my network location on the fly (useful when I connect to multiple static-IP ethernet networks), and has the added benefit of letting me change things like my default printer, volume levels, screen brightness, etc (I also set it up to automatically turn my Bluetooth adapter on & off) when I change between locations.
  • SlimBatteryMonitor. It’s smaller than the OS X battery meter, and lets me change its colors to reflect on-mains, on-battery, and battery-low states. Also lets me customize when the “plug in your stupid laptop” warning pops up.
  • SynergyKM. A PreferencePane that adds a GUI to Synergy. Synergy, for the uninitiated, lets you use one keyboard and mouse to control multiple machines. To clarify, I’m typing this right now using the keyboard on the WIndows XP machine at my desk here at work.
  • Apple’s Bluetooth controller.
  • Airport wireless controller (also stock)
  • Fast User Switching controller (stock). I use this to quickly get back to the login screen; it’s faster than waiting for my screensaver to start, and I didn’t want to set up a hotcorner to do it automatically.
  • MenuCalendarClock iCal. I’m using the “free” version, because I didn’t need any of its advanced features. I like it more than Apple’s menubar clock because it’s (a) much easier to put the date on there, and (b) has a pop-out calendar for quick “what day of the week is that?” lookups.
  • Spotlight. Duh.

And that’s it. I’ll spare everyone another post about my favorite applications (most of ’em haven’t changed; look through the archives if you’re really interested).

ABC News: Princess Bride: 20 Yrs. Later: This photo gallery sort of reminds me of the line from Grosse Pointe Blank: “It was as if everyone had swelled.”

Nifty Leopard feature

Yeah, don’t ask how I got it, because the answer will be “the Internet.”

I just discovered that if you don’t have connection sharing turned on, and you plug in an ethernet cable (and that ethernet interface is configured), AirPort automatically turns itself off.

Nifty.

Oops!

So logic.cx has expired, mostly because I just wait for the renewal notifications to arrive instead of actively tracking the domain renewals (or even using a calendar of some kind). If you need to email me, send your email to an @devlogic.org address (or my gmail account, if you know that address). I anticipate the logic.cx domain (and its associated email addresses/lists) to be back up in a few days, depending on how quickly cocca.ki can answer my email.

Silly Internet Meme

Ryan and Sarah did it, so I figured I’d follow suit.

1. What bill do you hate paying the most? Rent. It’s the only check I have to write every month, thanks to online bill-pay.

2. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner? Home. I’m an awesome cook.

live from Paul's 30th birthday

it seems like all of us are getting old. I hit 30 back in november, Paul hits 30 in about 45 minutes. It seems like only yesterday we were climbing mountains in New Mexico, and I know that was 12 years ago. funny how life flies by while you’re too busy living it to notice.

Don’t Point That Menu at My Child, Please - New York Times

Don’t Point That Menu at My Child, Please - New York Times: I really enjoyed this article, which (if the NYT has expired it from public view, is about the growing movement against the concept of a special kid’s menu which seems to be frequently filled with chicken fingers and fries). It makes a lot of sense to me. Not from a parent’s perspective (because I’ve still got a decent bit of time before I’ll be a parent, unless fate intervenes), but from the perspective of someone who’s just tired of the dumbing-down of culture in general. Kids have taste buds that work just as well as adults; why not give ’em stuff that will be tasty, but not “taste like chicken” (to steal an overly-clichéd phrase)?

That hard drive is HOW big?

Ultrastar A7K1000: I guess it’s finally time to buy a new hard drive. Hitachi has released the A7K1000, which has a maximum capacity of 1000GB. Yes, you read that right. One Terabyte.

Good God, you could download so many MP3s onto that drive.

Or, you know, back up Wikipedia a few times.

Hey, Google! That's nifty!

3:14 AM

That’s a piece of a screenshot that I took this morning at 3:14 AM. It’s from my iGoogle page (you know, that customized home page that Google will give you if you go to www.google.com/ig). I hit refresh at 3:15 AM, and it was gone.

Just your daily moment of “hey, that’s neat”.

N.B. I’m almost always asleep at 3:15 PM, so I don’t know if this is a 12-hour thing, or a 24-hour thing. Maybe someone who has the time can check and leave a comment?

heh. iTheme.

It’s cheesy, but I’ll leave it up for a day or two. In case you’re reading the feed version of this, I installed a new theme on the site called “iTheme”. It’s pretty much an “I’m a Mac über-fanboi” theme, but it’s worth a laugh for a day or two.
