Augusto Pinochet - 25 Nov 1915 - 10 Dec 2006

Augusto Pinochet, 25 Nov. 1915 - 10 Dec. 2006 Why are there women here dancing on their own? Why is there this sadness in their eyes? Why are the soldiers here Their faces fixed like stone? I can’t see what it is that they dispise They’re dancing with the missing They’re dancing with the dead They dance with the invisible ones Their anguish is unsaid They’re dancing with their fathers They’re dancing with their sons They’re dancing with their husbands They dance alone They dance alone ...

Gmail on a Sony Ericsson k700i

Because I had so much trouble finding it via Google: If you want to use the new gmail app on your k700i (instead of using the built-in browser or Opera Mini), you need to install the SSL CA certificate. Go here: https://www.verisign.com/cgi-bin/support/rootcert/getrootcert.cer Save the .cer file, transfer to your phone via bluetooth (or whatever), and like magic, it works.

fun times in computer land

Well, it finally happened. My laptop is dying. I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t spring for applecare, ‘cause it would’ve expired two weeks ago anyway. Things went wrong last Wednesday; on the way up to D/FW for Thanksgiving, something must’ve died on the logic board. When I opened the iBook up in the hotel, to make sure the wireless router was configured properly, I got bus errors. Much later (after dinner), it looked like the hard drive was bad. ...

Weary

I. Am. Tired. No other way to say it. I’m tired. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. I’m just worn down. Exhausted. I wish I could take the 4 days that I don’t have to work next week, and spend them alone in a cabin in the woods instead of driving to Arlington. Don’t get me wrong; I love my family. I just think I might need some “alone time” for a while, to relax and recharge. The drive I’m planning to take tonight will probably help a little, but I doubt it will offset the huge amounts of stress I’ll experience on Thursday. ...

Macworld: News: Eudora e-mail client to go open source: A moment of silence, if you will, for Eudora. I stopped using it years ago, but it sure did hold on for a long time.

New blog I'm reading: Kitchen Parade

I just found a new favorite blog of the week, called Kitchen Parade. Excellent, tasty recipes (at least, the most recent 15 seem to be), and nutritional information below most of the recipes. The ones which feature consistent ingredients, that is; things like “leftover soup” (i.e, soup made from leftovers) can’t be calculated. And Points! Each recipe which features nutritional information includes Weight Watcher Point values per serving. That’s awesome, because I’m frequently too lazy to even go to the effort of (divide calories by 50, add 1/14th of the fat grams, subtract 1/5 of the fiber). ...

Lost

People “in the know”, who are both familiar with my likes and personality, and who watch television, have said to me Paul, you would really like Lost. You should watch it. Now, I typically trust the opinions of these people; one of ’em is a very talented writer and the others usually hit the nail on the head in regards to what I might enjoy. So, I see that Lost is available on the iTunes store. Apple wants $1.99 an episode, for 320x240 DRM’ed video that I’ll only be able to watch on my laptop. Seems like a lot when I can get the DVDs for $42.87 (that’s season 1; season 3 is $35.99) on Amazon. But I digress. I’m in the process of downloading Season 1 of Lost. This isn’t the first time I’ve had these episodes on my computer; about a year ago, before S2 started, I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes. It’s good writing, so far as I remember, and as long as it doesn’t start getting stupid like JJ Abrams’ other show, I think I may stick with it. However, it appears that ABC is again pulling their “starts at 5 minutes after the hour” shit, so I’ll likely never watch it off of TV, instead opting to download it. iTunes generally has the episodes pretty soon after they air, or should I desire, I know there are places that exist in a moral grey area that I could use to acquire the episodes as well. ...

Hollandaise Sauce

So I made some Hollandaise sauce the other day. Aside from a bit of stiffness in my wrist from all the whisking, it’s not actually that hard. I used the Good Eats recipe (from the episode Hitting the Sauce; try Google or GEFP for the actual details). Having done it the “easy” way, I’m curious as to how difficult it is to make the sauce in the traditional manner, with melted clarified butter instead of chilled knobs of butter. The traditional way is a bit more work (I hate clarifying butter, because it’s such a pain in the ass when I try to get the solids separated out), but I think the texture will probably be a bit less “thick” on the tongue, and both more and less rich at the same time, if that makes sense. ...
