Spam report

It’s time for the new spam report! Since I run the mail server for several domains (well, 2), I have the benefit of being able to create an email address whenever I need one. For instance, if I needed to give an email address to “example.com” in order to sign up for something, I’d edit my .aliases file, and create the address “example.com -AT- logic.cx”. That way, I know, without a doubt, where a spammer got my email address. ...

Freshmeat rocks!

I can’t link to my personal install publicly, but I “discovered” a new piece of software called tasks the other day. You gotta love random searches on freshmeat. It’s done by one of the major contributors to wordpress (the software this site is based on). It is (in the words of Ferris Bueller) so choice. If you haven’t clicked on that link yet, it’s a “todo” program. Here are the major features that I use: ...

LILO

I keep seeing this in my referer logs, so here goes: If you’re seeing “LI 99 99 99 99 99 99 99” (99 ad infinitum) when you turn your computer on, LILO (the Linux Loader for the uninitiated) is fucked. You’ll either need to use a boot disc (you did make one when you installed that new kernel, right?), or reinstall. When it happened to me, I reinstalled. I didn’t lose that much (aside from my custom /etc/aliases file), but I could have, had I not managed my discs and partitions properly. ...

Fun with the IRS

No matter how I mess with the numbers, my income tax refund is only going to be 67 cents. That’s $0.67 . . . . By some definitions, that means I did my withholding perfectly this year; I don’t have to write the government a check, and I also didn’t provide them with an interest-free loan. Of course, this also means that instead of saving the extra money I wasn’t paying the IRS, I must have wantonly spent it on things like DVDs and other low-dollar luxuries. It’s really a shame I didn’t save up all that extra money and get something I really want, like a Powerbook. ...

Interesting Read

I found this article linked from slashdot, but it’s still good in its own right. It’s basically a (mostly) non-partisan discussion of BSD, written for an audience of Linux users. You should read it.

Hey, what's this site?

Pholph’s Scrabble Generator My Scrabble© Score is: 15. What is your score? Get it here. On an unrelated note, I really think I need to post more often. Unfortunately, that means I need to do more things. It’s not like anyone’s interested in “I played Zelda for 5 hours again today. Then I checked my email and went to work.”

Ethernet

If you ever forget what the spec is for crimping ethernet cables (cat-5 or cat-5e), this page has the pinouts. Another page on that same site tells how to do 25-pair phone and audio wires, too.

New project!

The worst part of any programming project, I’m convinced, is the beginning. I’ve put a small number of hours (less than 10) into this project, but even with that small amount of efford, I can’t really see any results yet, because everything is backend (database design, basic functions that work, but with only stub programs running them). But when I finish, boy is this site going to be functional. It’s really a shame I just can’t do “pretty” to save my life. Oh, well. Maybe someone will like what they see, and offer to pretty it up for me. ...
